Millions of Americans suffer from Insomnia. What is insomnia? Why can't we sleep? If you have insomnia, you may have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. Waking up several times a night and having trouble falling back to sleep makes you lose sleep time, thus making you more tired during the day. This may have side effects such as trouble concentrating, grogginess and if prolonged, can lead to possible health problems.
The average adult sleeps for seven to eight hours per night. Some people say they only need 5 or 6 hours per night, while others need 9 or 10 or more.
Insomnia is usually a temporary condition. It is often caused by stress and anxiety or illness. If insomnia persists, you should see you doctor.
Other causes of insomnia include:
-nicotine, it's a stimulant
-caffeine,it's a stimulant
-traveling, flying or working shift work, these things upset our internal biological clock
-depression, it can cause insomnia or sleeping excessively, depending on the person
-medicines, especially decongestants and antidepressants
-pain or other medical conditions, ashthma, arthritis, heartburn, hormonal changes
sleep apnea-brief periods of no breathing, discuss this with your doctor
There are things you can do to help yourself get a good night's sleep and hopefully nip insomnia in the bud. Don't drink coffee, tea or sodas with caffeine or other stimulants in the evening. Light exercise daily or at least three times a day can help you relax, become tired and sleep better, BUT don't exercise too close to bedtime, (finish at least two hours before bed).
